THE SAFETY YELLOW BOW-TIE
<img src="http://payload163.cargocollective.com/1/0/23561/5564440/yellowbowtie.jpg" width="600" height="450" width_o="600" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload163.cargocollective.com/1/0/23561/5564440/yellowbowtie_o.jpg" data-mid="29993654" border="0" align="left"/>
In January 2012, artist Nathalie Quagliotto launched The Safety Yellow Label, a new fashion label devoted to recontextualizing various safety yellow materials into ready-to-wear items. This label features ready-to-wear objects modelled after public objects, people, and situations involving the colour yellow. Quagliotto focuses on the uniqueness that is Safety Yellow, a colour known as having a public significance of caution and awareness. This colour actually comes in different shades of yellow and is often used in public settings such as construction sites and on public road signs. It is a known fact that the human cannot ignore such a colour because it's brightness has a specific hold on the cones and the rods in the eye.

The first product launched in the collection is the Safety Yellow bow-tie. The bow-tie is an object of elegance and pure sophistication. It is made of a thick textured water-resistant and tear-resistant material imported from Massachusetts, USA, a material used to produce the vests that construction workers wear while on the job so they are immediately noticeable to the human eye. Such an elegant, high-class object is modelled after a blue-collar worker's clothing material. Each bow-tie is hand-made by Quagliotto. It is a standard sized ready-to-wear adjustable bow-tie for man and woman. It holds Quagliotto's screen-printed signature.

Residency exhibition for Accessibility2013: CMD+R
Johnson Alcove of the Cleveland State Community College. Cleveland, TN, USA
April 5-May 5, 2013

For this media art residency in Cleveland Tennessee at the Cleveland State Community College, Quagliotto produced an artwork consisting of creating a new typeface for branding Cleveland as a party destination, which is the exact opposite of what Cleveland promotes. Using an existing typeface found on signs in the city mixed with "afterparty" and "raveparty" typefaces that one would never see in the town, a new typeface was created in CS6 then transferred to a MakerBot Replicator 3D printer machine for plastic block letters.

The residency was held from March 23-April 6, 2013.

Three yellow neon signs that read the word "GALLERY" and are placed in close-proximity of one another in an arena. By placing commercial gallery signage in a completely different environment of where it would normally be found, the project creates a type of pop-up gallery space. The gallery context is transformed into a site-specific intervention which pushes the public who possibly have little experience with art to think about what an artwork, an exhibition, and a gallery could be.

Location: Streetstville Arena – Vic Johnston Community Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. April 29-May 5, 2013.

Showing Off neon sign
8 X 20 inches (edition of 5) 2012
Edition #1 in private collection- 4 of 5 available.

Showing Off is a new neon work by artist Nathalie Quagliotto. The neon is based on the famous and playful children's educational activity of "SHOW & TELL", which teaches skills of social behaviour by innocently showing off. Quagliotto subverts this innocence by shifting the text and using the seductive glow of commercial window neon to inculcate the social behaviour of maturity.

Shown at gallerywest in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, January 2013.

Fused, reconfigured, and re-packaged yellow banana ice pops

During an artist in residence program at the Brandon Folk Music and Arts Society in conjunction with their annual festival and co-produced by the Art gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Brandon, Manitoba, Canada) in July 2012, Quagliotto produced dozens of fused yellow ice pops. They were sold candidly from an ice cream truck on the Keystone grounds of Brandon where the general public could attempt to try and eat them. The festival ran from July 19-22, 2012.
